PLAY DOUGH

Mix in a medium pot . . . . . . . . 4 cups white flour

                                                2 cups salt

                                                6 teaspoons cream of tartar

Combine and add . . . . . . . . . .  4 cups water

                                                4 tablespoons oil

                                                Food coloring

Cook over medium heat and stir for 3-5 minutes.  It will look like a globby messJ

When it forms a ball in center of pot, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead.  Cool.  Store play dough in a plastic bag or an air tight container.  

BAKING DOUGH

2 cups flour

1 cup salt

Water

Mix the dry ingredients; then add enough water to create a workable dough.  Sculpt figures or roll and cut the dough with cookie cutters.  Bake the dough at 300 degrees F for 1-1½ hours

(depending on the thickness of the dough).  Cool.  Finished products can be painted.

GOOP

One part cornstarch

One part water

Mix cornstarch with water in a large tray or tub.  Enjoy the tactile experience.

PUTTY  

1 cup white glue (not “school glue”)

1 cup liquid starch

Remind your child that these are not food items.  Combine two ingredients in a large glass or plastic bowl.  Stir.  Putty will bounce, stretch, roll or transfer newsprint.  Can be stored in a plastic container or an airtight plastic bag.

Problem:  Putty sticks to hands – add 1 teaspoon starch

               Putty too stringy – add ½ teaspoon glue

SALT  PAINT

2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon liquid starch

A few drops of tempera paint  

Mix the ingredients together.  The salt gives a frosted appearance to the paint.

WATER COLOR PAINTS

1 tablespoon vinegar

1 tablespoon baking soda

4 tablespoons cornstarch

1 tablespoon light corn syrup

Food coloring

Stir baking soda into vinegar (it will bubble up quite high – fun science experience).  Mix and add cornstarch, corn syrup and a few drops of food coloring.  Pour into small plastic disposable containers (margarine tubs, baby food containers, etc.).  The paints will get hard – use like store bought watercolor paint.

BUBBLE MIXTURE  

¼ cup dishwashing liquid

½ cup water

1 teaspoon sugar

Food coloring (optional)

Mix the dishwashing liquid, water and sugar together in a container.  If color is desire, mix in a few drops of food coloring.

COOKIE DOUGH ORNAMENTS  

4 cups all purpose flour

1 cup salt

½ cup cinnamon

3 tablespoons nutmeg

1½ cups lukewarm water

2 tablespoons ground cloves

Sift dry ingredients together.  Add water until dough is the consistency of molding clay.  Dough can be wrapped and refrigerated overnight.  Roll or flatten dough.  Shape the dough with cookie cutters.  Bake in a preheated 300 degree oven for approximately one hour.  If being used as a hanging ornament, make hole in top of ornament before baking.
